Selective Oil and Hydrocarbon Absorption from Industrial Wastewater Streams
Skytech Ultrafab Oil Absorbing Bags are engineered from hydrophobic melt-blown polypropylene fibres that selectively absorb oil and hydrocarbons while repelling water. Ideal for bilge water treatment, stormwater runoff control, coolant traps, and industrial wastewater pre-treatment, these bags can absorb up to 15–20 times their own weight in oil. Available in custom sizes, mesh shell options, and absorption capacities to meet specific environmental discharge regulations.
What Are Oil Absorbing Bags?
Oil Absorbing Bags use hydrophobic (water-repelling) and oleophilic (oil-attracting) melt-blown polypropylene sorbent media contained within a mesh outer shell. When placed in contact with oil-contaminated water, the sorbent media selectively wicks and retains oil and hydrocarbon liquids while water passes through. The saturated bag is removed and can be wrung out and reused or disposed of according to local environmental regulations.
Oil Absorbing Bags
Features and Benefits
-
High Oil Absorption Capacity:
Melt-blown PP sorbent absorbs 15–20 times its dry weight in oil and hydrocarbons — one of the highest absorption ratios among commercially available sorbent products
-
Water-Repelling Selectivity:
Hydrophobic fibre construction repels water while absorbing oil — ensuring the bag increases in weight only from oil uptake, maximising useful capacity
-
Durable Mesh Shell:
Polypropylene mesh outer shell contains the sorbent securely, allows free liquid contact, and withstands mechanical handling during placement and retrieval
-
Broad Hydrocarbon Compatibility:
Absorbs diesel fuel, crude oil, lubricating oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant oil, and most organic solvents and hydrocarbon liquids
-
Custom Sizes:
Available in bag sizes from 100 mm × 300 mm to 400 mm × 1200 mm; custom dimensions and absorption capacities for specific application requirements
-
Reusable Option:
Premium grades can be wrung out, dried, and reused multiple times — reducing sorbent consumable costs in high-frequency oil spill management

Applications
-
Bilge Water Treatment:
Placed in bilge water collection sumps on ships and offshore platforms to absorb oil sheen and hydrocarbon contamination before discharge
-
Stormwater Runoff:
Deployed in storm drains, catch basins, and retention ponds at industrial facilities to intercept oil and fuel runoff before it reaches waterways
-
Coolant Trap Systems:
Used in metalworking coolant systems to absorb tramp oil that accumulates on coolant surfaces — extending coolant service life
-
Industrial Wastewater:
First-stage oil removal from process wastewater at automotive, metal finishing, and food processing facilities before biological treatment
-
Emergency Spill Response:
Rapid deployment for containment of fuel and oil spills on water surfaces, concrete floors, and industrial drains
