In pharmaceutical manufacturing, the Fluid Bed Dryer (FBD) is one of the most widely used pieces of granulation equipment. The filter bag inside the FBD is often overlooked, yet it is one of the most critical GMP components in the entire granulation line.
What Does an FBD Filter Bag Do?
During the fluidisation process, hot air flows upward through the product bed, causing granules to dry while fine particles are carried upward. The FBD filter bag captures these fine particles, preventing product loss and cross-contamination while allowing air to pass through freely.
Key Selection Criteria
1. Antistatic Properties
Fine pharmaceutical powders — particularly APIs — can accumulate static charge. Antistatic FBD bags (with conductive fibres woven into the felt) are mandatory for many active pharmaceutical ingredients to prevent explosion risk and ensure uniform fluidisation.
2. Closure Type
FBD bags are available with:
- Zipper closures – Easy installation and replacement
- Velcro closures – Quick-fit for frequent changeovers
- Retaining ring / snap band – Positive mechanical seal
3. OEM Compatibility
Skytech Ultrafab manufactures FBD bags compatible with all major OEMs including Glatt, GEA, Aeromatic, ACG, Shakti Pharmatech, and LB Bohle. We fabricate to exact drawings to ensure leak-free fitment.
Material of Construction
Standard FBD bags use needle-punched polyester felt with a heat-set, glazed surface finish that reduces particle adhesion and simplifies cleaning. For applications requiring FDA/cGMP-compliant contact materials, we offer food-grade and USP Class VI certified options.
